I sin State of the Union tale 12. februar gjorde president Obama det klart at Kongressen nå må foreta seg noe for å redusere utslippene av CO2. Hvis ikke ville han ta saken i egne hender.
I følge Scientific American sa Obama blant annet:
«But for the sake of our children and our future, we must do more to combat climate change. «It’s true that no single event makes a trend. But the fact is, the 12 hottest years on record have all come in the last 15. Heat waves, droughts, wildfires, floods — all are now more frequent and intense.»»We can choose to believe that Superstorm Sandy, and the most severe drought in decades, and the worst wildfires some states have ever seen were all just a freak coincidence. «Or we can choose to believe in the overwhelming judgment of science — and act before it’s too late.»
Han sa videre at:
«But if Congress won’t act soon to protect future generations, I will. I will direct my Cabinet to come up with executive actions we can take, now and in the future, to reduce pollution, prepare our communities for the consequences of climate change, and speed the transition to more sustainable sources of energy.»
En åtte siders plan offentliggjort fra Det Hvite Hus i går kveld sier det tydeligere:
«the United States must continue to take steps to reduce carbon pollution while also improving our ability to manage the climate impacts that are already being felt at home. The President has directed his cabinet to identify additional executive actions from across the administration to help reduce pollution, prepare our cities and nation for the worsening effects of climate change, and accelerate the transition to more sustainable sources of energy, which will be assessed if Congress does not take action.»
Obamas beskrivelse av klimautfordringen faller ikke i god jord hos alle. Den republikanske senatoren Ron Johnson fra Wisconsin sa at Obama er..
..pretty dedicated to … harming our economy with emissions-reducing programs.
«By the way, I’m certainly somebody who does not believe in man-made global warming.I don’t believe the science has just proved that in any way, shape or form. And I have no idea why anybody would want to penalize their economy to the tunes of potentially a trillion dollars or more to address something that may not even be caused by man. And even if it were, probably there’s nothing we can do to reverse the course.»
Hetebølge, orklanen Sandy og supersnøstormen Nemo til tross. Klimafornekterne fornekter seg ikke, men klamrer seg til håpet om at vitenskapen tar feil.
